The SAFE Act is a Proposed Initiative to the Legislature, Which Has Hopes of Appearing on the 2026 Ballot.

This initiative gives Washingtonians powerful new tools to protect themselves and their loved ones from addiction. By standardizing ID checks and allowing individuals to voluntarily block their own access to harmful products, the initiative blends accountability with personal empowerment. It also ensures privacy and fairness for every community, creating a safer and more supportive Washington for all.

Addiction is one of the most deadly issues Washingtonians face today. In 2023 alone, our state lost 3,477 people to opioid overdoses, 243 to drunk driving, and more than 8,700 to smoking-related cancers. These aren’t just numbers — they’re families changed forever.

Everyone should have the freedom to choose whether they use an addictive substance or walk into a certain establishment. But today, that choice isn’t truly free. With nonstop advertising, social pressure, and the desire to fit in, it can be incredibly difficult to say no — and even harder to stop once you’ve started. What looks like a personal decision is often shaped by influences that leave people feeling pushed, trapped, or overwhelmed.

And for many, it starts even earlier. Products like nicotine, alcohol, and other “gateway” substances can open the door to stronger addictions, making it easier to slip down a path no one ever intended to take.

THIS.          IS  NOT.          OKAY.

The SAFE Act will change this.  By allowing people to self-restrict their access to addictive substances such as alcohol and nicotine, we can reduce relapse, prevent harm before it happens, and lower the devastating toll addiction takes on individuals, families, and communities. This is about empowering people with a tool that helps them stay safe — on their terms.

STAND WITH US.          BE THE CHANGE.          MAKE WASHINGTON SAFE FOR ALL.
